At what point in a cars lifespan does it reach "Classic Status"? Yes, There are "Instant Classics" such as the E Type Jaguar, Austin Healey 3000, The more Modern Ford Sierra RS Cosworth and the BMW E30 M3.
but what puts a car into this league in the first place? Style? Badge? Performance? Quirkiness?
Having a look around a local retail car park whilst bored out of my head I pondered this question and surveyed the cars around me. There was everything from the truly horrendous efforts from Korea which I would like to see, along with their owners. Put down by law. To a truly stunning Alpha Brera in gleaming black. Now, the latter will certainly gain Classic Status in the future (As long as it manages to stay together) But the former certainly won't (Even if they do last more than a decade I certainly won't recognise them LOL) There were also lots of older generations of cars present with such delights as most of the Rover travesties now owned by overweight and past their sell-by-date individuals, the truly bland line up of 90's Vauxhalls and run of the mill Fords. All of which, turned me to a depressed state of mind as to their owners blatant neglect of any cleaning products for years!
All was not lost though as, out of the gloom appeared a lovely 90's VW Golf VR6 looking completely standard. This is certainly my idea of a modern classic car (Chavved up versions need not apply LOL)
All of this car watching (Along with the best past time available when in a situation like this.........People watching :)) made me draw up a top ten future classic cars.
(Note.......I am purposely not including super cars as I like to concentrate on the "Affordable" Future classics)
So, In no particular order, Here goes.
1 - The new Mini Cooper S
2 - The Fiat 500 Abarth
3 - The New Ford Focus RS
4 - Subaru Impreza Turbo
5 - Renault Megane R26
6 - VW Golf R32
7 - Audi RS4 (Both Avant and Saloon)
8 - Smart Car (For the quirky out there and will probably be loved by Students)
9 - Mitsubishi EVO (All)
10 - New VW Beetle (again, Students LOL)
Like I've said these are in no particular order. Please, feel free to add comments, Insults etc at both my choices and use of the English language.
